How we wrote this review: this is a research-based review. It is built from Synthesia’s publicly published features and pricing pages, checked in October 2026. We have not run our own hands-on benchmark of Synthesia for this article, so you won’t find made-up test scores or star ratings here, just what the product offers, what it costs, and who it suits.

What is Synthesia?
Synthesia is an AI video generator from Synthesia Ltd, a company based in London. Instead of booking a camera crew, a presenter and a studio, you write (or generate) a script, pick an AI avatar and a voice, and the platform renders a video of that avatar presenting your content. The company positions it as a video platform for business, and most of its feature set is aimed at teams that need to produce and update a lot of explainer-style video: learning and development, HR, sales enablement, customer education and internal comms.

It is not a general-purpose creative video editor in the way a timeline editor is, and it is not mainly a tool for cinematic or social-first content. Its strength is consistent, repeatable, talking-presenter video that can be edited like a document and translated quickly.
Key features
AI avatars and personal avatars
Synthesia’s stock avatar library scales with the plan: 125+ avatars on Basic and Starter, 180+ on Pro and 240+ on Enterprise, according to its pricing page. Its “expressive avatars” are designed to gesture, for example waving or pointing, based on the script. Paid plans also include personal avatars, where you record yourself and get an avatar that looks and sounds like you (5 on Pro; Enterprise is listed as unlimited, subject to reasonable use). A higher-end studio avatar is available as a paid add-on for annual plans. Synthesia states that every avatar is created with explicit consent and that all videos go through content moderation.

AI voices, voice cloning and 140+ languages
You can choose from hundreds of AI voices across 140+ languages, clone your own voice to pair with a personal avatar, or upload your own voiceover instead of using text-to-speech.
Translation and AI dubbing
One-click translation turns an existing Synthesia video into other languages. AI dubbing goes further and works on any video, including footage of real people: it aims to preserve the original speaker’s voice and accent, with optional lip-sync (which, per the pricing page, uses twice the credits). A multilingual video player can automatically serve viewers the version in their own language.

AI Video Assistant and Syren
The AI Video Assistant converts slide decks, PDFs and web pages into draft videos, and PowerPoint import is supported directly. Synthesia has also introduced Syren, an AI video agent: you describe the video you want and it builds it. The pricing page notes that a one-minute Syren video typically uses 1,000 to 2,000 credits, so it is noticeably more credit-hungry than standard video creation.
AI b-roll, screen recorder and templates
Synthesia integrates third-party generative models (it currently lists Veo 3.1, FLUX.2 and Nano Banana Pro) to generate b-roll clips and images. There is also an AI Screen Recorder Chrome extension that transcribes your narration and removes pauses, 60+ templates, a stock media library, brand kits, custom fonts and auto-generated captions.
Interactivity, sharing and analytics
Videos can include in-video quizzes, clickable CTAs and branching scenarios (higher tiers). For distribution, you get MP4 downloads in 1080p, public video pages, embeds that update automatically when you edit the video, password or SSO protection, SCORM export for learning management systems (Enterprise), and analytics for views, watch time and engagement. Teams get live collaboration and comments, and developers get an API for video creation and dubbing.
Synthesia pricing (as published October 24, 2026)
Synthesia now uses a credit system: one shared pool of credits covers video creation, dubbing, surveys and AI b-roll. Every plan, including the free one, gets a monthly allowance of 10 minutes of video (or dubbing), 3 survey responses and 500 credits. Paid plans add credits on top.

| Plan | Price | What you get (summary) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $0 | 10 min of video/month, 500 credits, 125+ avatars, watermark on videos, 1 editor |
| Starter | $29/month billed monthly (lower on annual billing) | +1,250 credits/month (about 12 extra minutes of typical video), no watermark, AI Video Assistant, 1 editor + 3 guests |
| Pro | $89/month billed monthly, or $64/month billed yearly | +6,000 credits/month (up to about 60 extra minutes), 180+ avatars, 5 personal avatars, 1 editor + 5 guests; higher credit levels available |
| Enterprise | Custom | 240+ avatars, SCORM export, SSO, dedicated customer success manager, custom seats and volume |
A few details worth knowing before you pick a plan, all from Synthesia’s own pricing FAQ:
- A typical finished minute of video uses about 100 credits, more if the avatar is on screen the whole time. You are charged for newly generated footage only, not for editing or previewing.
- Monthly allowances and plan credits do not roll over. On annual plans, the year’s credits are available upfront. Extra credits bought separately are valid for 12 months.
- If you hit your limit, video creation pauses until renewal unless you buy more credits or upgrade.
- There is no pay-per-video option; it is a recurring subscription you can cancel from account settings.
Who Synthesia is for
- Learning and development teams producing training and compliance videos that need regular updates and LMS delivery.
- Global companies that need the same video in many languages without re-shooting.
- Sales and customer success teams making product explainers, onboarding walkthroughs and personalized videos at volume.
- Solo creators and small businesses who want a professional presenter-style video without appearing on camera, as long as the monthly minutes fit their output.
It is a weaker fit if you mainly want fast, punchy short-form social clips, music-driven edits, or repurposing long recordings into highlights. Tools built specifically for those jobs may serve you better (see alternatives below).

Pros and cons
Pros
- Large stock avatar library plus personal avatars on paid plans
- Very broad language coverage (140+) with translation and dubbing built in
- Edit-like-a-document workflow; embedded videos update automatically
- Strong business features: brand kits, collaboration, analytics, SCORM, SSO
- Published focus on consent-based avatars and content moderation
- Free plan to try it, no credit card required
Cons
- Credit system takes some learning; Syren and lip-sync use more credits
- Monthly minutes on Starter are modest (about 22 minutes total per month by Synthesia’s estimate)
- Unused allowance doesn’t roll over month to month
- Some features (SCORM, full avatar library, SSO) are Enterprise-only
- Free-plan videos carry a watermark
- Presenter-style format is not the best fit for every kind of video
Synthesia alternatives
- HeyGen: the most direct competitor, also built around AI avatars, voice cloning and video translation, and popular with marketers and creators.
- Pictory: a different approach. Pictory focuses on turning scripts, blog posts and long recordings into stock-footage videos and short highlight clips, rather than avatar presenters.
- InVideo: a prompt-to-video and template-based tool aimed at marketing and social content, with stock media and AI-generated scenes.
If you need a human-looking presenter and multilingual training content, Synthesia and HeyGen are the main tools to compare. If you need social clips or text-to-video without a presenter, look at Pictory or InVideo. See our Top 5 AI video tools roundup for a side-by-side view.
FAQ
Is Synthesia free?
Yes. The Basic plan is free and includes 10 minutes of video, 3 survey responses and 500 credits each month, but videos carry a Synthesia watermark.
Can I make an avatar of myself?
Yes. Personal avatars are included on paid plans: you record yourself and Synthesia builds an avatar of you, and you can clone your voice to match.
How many languages does Synthesia support?
Synthesia lists 140+ languages and voices for video creation. AI dubbing supports 70+ output languages on self-serve plans and 140+ on Enterprise.
Do unused credits roll over?
No. The monthly allowance and plan credits reset each billing period. Separately purchased credits last 12 months.
Can I use Synthesia videos commercially?
Synthesia is built for business use, and paid plans remove the watermark. Check Synthesia’s current terms of service for the exact usage rights on your plan.
Verdict
Based on its published features and pricing, Synthesia is one of the most complete AI avatar video platforms for business. Its standout strengths are the size of its avatar and language library, built-in translation and dubbing, and the enterprise plumbing (collaboration, analytics, LMS export, security) that training and communications teams need. The trade-offs are a credit system you’ll want to understand before committing, modest minutes on the entry plan, and a presenter-led format that isn’t meant for every type of video.
If presenter-style training, explainer or multilingual video is your main use case, the free plan is an easy, no-card way to see whether it fits your workflow before paying.
